Volunteer Opportunities

Education

  • Trail Tour Interpreter - Guide weekend visitors on interpretive walks along the 1 1/4 mile forest trails and 1 1/2 mile prairie trail.
  • Farm Exhibit Interpreter - Provide information and directions to visitors at the Martyn Farm.
  • Natural History Demonstrator - Demonstrate information about natural history topics by using visuals, bio facts and/or live animals.
  • Farm Demonstrator - Demonstrate information about the Martyn Farm by using visuals, artifacts and demonstrating a farm chore, such as making butter.
  • Weekday Teacher - Teach weekday children's classes offered in the current EcoAdventures Brochure. Natural history and farm topics are covered.
  • Outreach - Take ABNC's educational offerings off-site, to share information about ABNC with the public through booths and exhibits, distributing flyers and pamphlets to local businesses, and offering lectures on various topics.
  • Information Services Interpreter - Provide information and welcome visitors on the weekends.
Admissions
  • Man the desk for the staff receptionist when needed.
Stewardship
  • Provide assistance to ABNC by participating in preserve/wildlife habitat management and restoration.
  • Prairie Friday - Participate in prairie restoration efforts including plant salvage and relocation, mowing and vegetation transects.
  • Stewardship Saturday - Participate in ongoing Stewardship projects.
  • Prairie Burns - Take an active roll in our prairie restoration efforts by participating in prescribed prairie burns. Special training is held twice a year to earn a Burn Training Certificate. A certificate needs to be earned prior to participating in burns.
Facilities/Maintenance
  • Provide building and equipment repairs. Work on new construction projects. Participate in core area mowing (tractor training will be provided).
Animal Handler
  • Assist in the proper care and husbandry of all captive animals at ABNC. Training will be provided.
  • Demonstrate our animals to the public.
  • Assist with the care and feeding of the animals
Mailers
  • Prepare bulk mailings.
Clerical/Office
  • Assist ABNC staff in clerical, office and computer duties.
Special Events
  • Assist by helping with or coordinating ABNC's yearly events such as Fall Festival, Creepy Crawlers and Bayou Boil.
